| Timeline of events leading up to wedding day |
1. Applying for a flat
You can choose to apply for HDB or private flats (condos). I would encourage you to apply for HDB flat because there's a really lot of money involved in getting married and even a HDB flat can be quite costly too (depending on the location and size of flat).
For HDB flats, you can choose to apply for Build-to-Order (BTO) flats, Sale-of-Balance (SBF) flats or resale flats. BTO and SBF flats are essentially new flats, just that BTO flats means that HDB has a plan to build flats in a certain area, while SBF are BTO flats that are already in the process of building/ fully built.
2. Buying wedding rings
You need to buy a set of wedding bands (for both of you) and engagement ring (for the lady). Wedding bands are usually a a bit simple, meant for day-to-day usage, for the purposes of being reminded of your husband/ wife everyday and signalling to others that you're married. On the other hand, engagement ring is also known as a diamond ring, which the guy will give to the lady during proposal. It's better if both of you shop for the engagement ring together instead of a surprise ring during proposal day.
3. Wedding proposal
Wedding proposal is usually done by the guy, so guys, you can brainstorm how you want your ideal proposal to be like - the sky is the limit! It doesn't have to be elaborate and expensive, a sincere proposal is the best proposal. You can also think about the setting, props, manpower and speech that leads up to popping the question. By the way, the lady should not know what's going to happen during the proposal, it should be kept as a surprise!
4. Applying with ROM
You will need to apply with the Registry of Marriages to be considered legally married in Singapore. You can choose to have your ROM ceremony (a ceremony where solemniser will witness and officially announce that the two of you are legally married) together with your wedding banquet or on separate days. It is also necessary to find a solemniser from Registry of Marriages' list of solemnisers for the event.
5. Wedding banquet preparations
The most important thing you need to do is to choose an auspicious date and then to book early the wedding venue, wedding gowns, wedding day photography and videography. You don't want to end up left with inauspicious dates and having to delay your wedding.
6. House renovation
House renovation is a lot of work too. You can start early by getting ideas on your ideal flat layout (find pictures on pinterest). I encourage to meet up with a few interior designer firms before deciding which one to eventually engage. The renovation work will typically take up to 2 months, and you have to bring in other furniture yourself (such as lamp, sofa, tables and chairs).
